What is Global Weirding?

Climate change is now visibly affecting cities worldwide, bringing them under the influence of 'Global Weirding'—a phenomenon where extreme weather patterns, such as record-breaking heatwaves, unexpected cold spells, prolonged droughts, and excessive rainfall, become more frequent and intense.

A recent study by researchers at Bristol and Cardiff University analyzed climate patterns in 112 major cities worldwide and found drastic changes in weather conditions, affecting nearly 95% of the cities studied.

India's Major Cities Affected by Global Weirding

India is no exception to this climate crisis. Lucknow, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Bengaluru, and Delhi are among the cities experiencing an increase in heavy rainfall, floods, and prolonged droughts. Key factors contributing to this situation include:

Increased rainfall leading to urban flooding.

Extended dry spells worsening water shortages.

Outdated drainage and water management systems intensifying the crisis.

Climate expert Sol Oyuela warns that without immediate intervention, more Indian cities will face severe climate risks.

17 Cities Experiencing the Most Extreme Weather Shifts

The study identified 17 cities where extreme weather fluctuations are more pronounced:

Dallas: Experiencing prolonged droughts followed by intense storms and flooding.

Jakarta: A sinking city suffering from recurrent floods and water shortages.

Melbourne: Facing devastating wildfires followed by sudden heavy rains.

Nairobi: Crop failures due to drought, followed by floods and disease outbreaks.

Climate Flip: 24 Cities Where Weather Has Completely Reversed

In the past two decades, 24 cities worldwide have seen a complete shift in their climate patterns:

Riyadh: Once a desert, now frequently experiences floods.

Cairo: Formerly dry, now prone to regular flooding.

'Day Zero': Water Crisis in Karachi and São Paulo

Researchers warn that many cities are approaching 'Day Zero', a scenario where they completely run out of water.

Karachi and São Paulo are rapidly heading towards this crisis.

Nairobi, Khartoum, and Jakarta are also at high risk of severe water shortages.

Conclusion: Urgent Action Required

The effects of Global Weirding are becoming more evident, with cities worldwide experiencing record-breaking climate extremes. To protect both India and global urban centers, immediate actions are necessary:

Implement stronger climate policies.

Upgrade water management and drainage systems.

Adopt sustainable development strategies.

Without intervention, many cities worldwide may face unprecedented climate disasters, including severe droughts, floods, and water shortages.
