Malda’s Organic Mango Revolution: Record Production and Global Export – UPSC Current Affairs
Malda district in West Bengal, known as the “Mango Bowl of India”, has taken a major step in May 2025 with record mango production and a significant move towards organic farming. Export Expansion:
UK & Middle East: This year, Malda’s organic mangoes will be exported to the UK and Middle Eastern countries for the first time.
Japan: Under a separate initiative, 1,000 tons of Malda mangoes will be exported to Japan, with strict quality control and the use of Vapour Heat Treatment technology.
USA: Chemical-free Malda mangoes will now also reach the US market, marking a significant achievement for Indian fruit exports.
Popular Varieties: Himsagar and Langra varieties are in highest international demand and are being grown organically.
Quality Control:
The district horticulture department has banned the use of chemicals like paclobutrazol and instructed farmers to use only permissible pesticides in minimal quantities.
Continuous monitoring is being conducted by teams of 4–5 members across 15 blocks.
From next year, QR codes will be used to ensure traceability of organic mangoes.
Government & APEDA Support: Farmers are being trained in scientific management and export standards to ensure quality for international markets.
