104 Years Ago: The Beginning of Women’s Olympiad
On 24 March 1921, the world witnessed a historic moment in Monte Carlo, Monaco – the first ever Women’s Olympiad, an international sports event exclusively for women. This marked a turning point in the history of women in sports, making it the first full-scale international sports event for women.
Alice Milliat: The Woman Behind the Movement
The credit for organizing this landmark event goes to Alice Milliat, a French rower and pioneer in women's sports. In 1917, she founded an organization named Femina Sport, with the aim of encouraging women to participate in competitive sports such as athletics and swimming.
At that time, women were not allowed to participate in international events, especially the Olympic Games. Milliat, determined to challenge this discrimination, initiated the idea of a separate Olympiad for women.
Opposition from the Father of Modern Olympics
Interestingly, Pierre de Coubertin, the founder of the modern Olympic Games, strongly opposed the idea of women participating in the Olympics. He believed that women’s involvement could undermine the dignity of the Olympics.
However, Milliat challenged this mindset. Her efforts paid off when, for the first time in history, women were allowed to participate in athletics events at the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics — a monumental shift influenced by the success of the Women’s Olympiad.
Why the Women’s Olympiad Matters in 2025
As we commemorate 104 years of the Women’s Olympiad, it is essential to remember how this single event laid the groundwork for gender equality in sports. It serves as a powerful reminder of how determination and courage can break centuries-old barriers.
